Industrial hygiene survey report of John Deere Harvester Works, East Moline, Illinois.

  An industrial hygiene survey was conducted at the John Deere Harvester Works (SIC-3523) in an effort to determine hazardous exposures to workers at this site during the manufacturing of combines designed to harvest row and field crops such as wheat, corn, soybeans, and rice. At the time of the study, the company employed 6,009 persons at the site, of which 4,566 were hourly employees. Employees engaged in coating activities include spray painters (46), dip tank operators (9), and flow coat operators (9). All measurements except one of the 8 hour time weighted average measurements exceeded the OSHA standard for lead (7439921). All measurements for total chromium (7440473) were below the OSHA limit, but about 85% of these measurements exceeded the NIOSH recommended limit of 0.001mg/m3. All employees sampled were wearing respiratory protective devices. Therefore actual exposures would have been much less. Recommendations are offered on the work activities of certain painters and the respiratory protection used; chromium exposure; and spray painter positioning to minimize/prevent inadvertent spraying of one another.
