Survey for n-nitroso compounds at H.C. Macaulay Foundry Co., Berkeley, California.

  An on site visit was made to the B.C. Macaulay Foundry Company (SIC- 3321) located in Berkeley, California, for the purpose of determining whether N-nitroso compounds were present or formed in foundries during the manufacture of steel and iron castings. This company made gray iron, 28% chrome, Ni-hard, Ni-resist and ductile/nodular castings at a rate of 8 to 12 thousand tons per year. The company began in 1906 and currently had 143 employees. They used a sand core process that required amines (Ashland Process). Six sample sites were selected for area air sampling for N-nitroso compounds and their precursor amines. No N-nitroso compounds were found in the air at this site. No N-nitroso compounds or amines were found in the molding room. However, the dimethylamine process was not in use while the survey was being made nor was there any activity in the amine formulated sand core operation. The investigators suggest further analyses be conducted when all the amine consuming processes are in optimum operation. [Description provided by NIOSH]
