Description:A walkthrough survey was conducted by NIOSH and the Johns Hopkins University at Century Furniture Company (SIC-2514), Hickory, North Carolina on July 25 and 26, 1978. The purpose of the survey was to examine the manufacturing processes and determine whether this factory should be included in a larger survey investigating health hazards to painters. The furniture company employed 600 workers, including 120 in finishing, rubbing, or waxing areas. Preemployment medical examinations were performed, and audiograms were conducted regularly. The housekeeping appeared to be excellent, and spillage of sawdust, solvents, and coatings appeared to be slight. The wood furniture was finished in 6 to 26 steps, including stains, washcoat, oil filler, glaze, and sealer. Twelve spray coating stations and additional adjacent hand finishing operations were observed. Some operators were required to spray outside the area of the spraying booth's effective control zone, causing high concentrations of spray and mist in areas of the surrounding room. Some of the solvents commonly found in the coating materials were toluene (108883), xylene (1330207), methanol (67561), acetone (67641), and mineral spirits. The authors conclude that this facility would be appropriate for additional industrial hygiene evaluation. [Description provided by NIOSH]
