Survey of Columbus Coated Fabrics, Newark, California.

  The incidence of peripheral neuropathy and worker exposures to industrial solvents were determined at Columbus Coated Fabrics (SIC- 2295) in Newark, California, on October 2, 1973. The facility employed about 135 workers. Air samples were collected and analyzed for methyl-ethyl-ketone (78933) (MEK), methyl-isobutyl-ketone (108101), methyl-n-butyl-ketone (591786), hexane (110543), toluene (108883), and xylene (1330207). None of the solvent air concentrations approached the OSHA eight hour time weighted average standards, except in areas where printing equipment was cleaned with a solvent; this area had an MEK concentration of 174 parts per million (ppm) compared with the OSHA standard of 200ppm. Electromyogram tests on 32 employees were negative. The author concludes that no occupational hazard of peripheral neuropathy exists. He notes that a detailed industrial hygiene survey does not appear necessary, although an epidemiological study might be worthwhile. [Description provided by NIOSH]
