Description:Environmental and personal air samples were analyzed for acrolein (107028), formaldehyde (50000), acetaldehyde (75070), phenol (108952), propylene (115071), butylenes, amines, ethylene-oxide (75218) and dichlorodifluoromethane (75718), at the Xomed Company in Cincinnati, Ohio, on January 13 to 14, February 10, and September 2, 1977. The evaluation was requested by the management to determine potential exposures of an unspecified number of workers. Concentrations of acrolein, acetaldehyde, and formaldehyde were below the OSHA standards of 0.25, 360, and 37 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/cu m), respectively. Concentrations of phenol, propylene, butylenes and amines were below the lower limit of detection. Concentrations of waste sterilization gases were above the OSHA standards of 90mg/cu m for ethylene-oxide and 4,950mg/cu m for dichlorodifluoromethane. Both gases were later measured at concentrations below the respective OSHA standards after the installation of local exhaust ventilation. The author concludes that a health hazard did not exist at this facility. He recommends that periodic air sampling be conducted when conditions warrant, ventilation systems be modified, and the hot wire temperature be lowered to reduce particulate generation.
