  In response to a request from the Area Director of the OSHA Harrisburg Area Office, a medical survey was conducted of 12 employees at the American Color and Chemical Facility, Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, to evaluate exposure to p-nitrochlorobenzene (100005) (pNCB) and p-nitroaniline (100016) (pNA). Some evidence was found on blood tests of elevated methemoglobin in three of 12 workers as well as in some of the four comparison subjects. Preshift urinary aromatic amines were less than 92 nanograms/100 milliliters in all samples. Measurable amounts of aromatic amines were noted in two of nine postshift samples taken. One of these two also showed increased methemoglobin. No significant findings were reported on studies for cyanosis and clubbing. The author concludes that there is some evidence of absorption of pNA and pNCB at the facility. A medical monitoring program was put into place to protect worker health. The author recommends that a worker at the facility be trained in the recognition of signs and symptoms of methemoglobinemia and appropriate first aid. A medical consultant should be on call for emergencies. A nearby medical facility should be alerted so that immediate testing for blood methemoglobin and urinary aromatic amines can be performed.
