• Description:
  Worker exposures to xylene (1330207) and dimethylformamide (68122) (DMF) were determined at the Strip Joint (SIC-7641) in Wickford, Rhode Island during October, 1978. Xylene concentrations ranged from 1.2 to 28.8 parts per million (ppm), compared with the OSHA recommended criteria of 100ppm. DMF concentrations ranged from 2.1 to 12.5ppm, compared with the OSHA recommended criteria of 10ppm. Review of worker medical records did not reveal any apparent problems from solvent exposure. The author concludes that workers at this facility were not overexposed to solvents. He recommends specific safe solvent handling procedures, engineering controls to reduce solvent exposures, and the use of appropriate personal protective equipment. [Description provided by NIOSH]
