Description:Area and personal air samples for nitrous-oxide (10024972) and mercury (7439976) were collected at the U.S. Public Health Service Dental Clinic (SIC-8021), Cincinnati, Ohio, on January 29 to 31, 1980. The evaluation request came from the dentist. Seven of eight area air samples, and all personal samples, exceeded the NIOSH criteria for nitrous-oxide (25 parts per million). Mercury was detected only in one area sample, and the concentration was well below the OSHA limit of 0.1 milligrams per cubic meter. The authors conclude that no mercury hazard exists, but the dentist and his assistant are exposed to hazardous concentrations of nitrous oxide. They recommend good housekeeping practices, routine equipment maintenance, and use of scavenging type respirator masks. Speech by the patient should be minimized during procedures that involve nitrous-oxide. [Description provided by NIOSH]
