Description:A Hazard Evaluation and Technical Assistance survey was conducted by NIOSH on April 18-20, 1977 in the operating rooms of the Boulder Memorial Hospital (SIC-8062), Denver, Colorado. The survey was prompted by a request from the management regarding the exposure of 13 affected employees to anesthetic gases. Nitrous-oxide (10024972), halothane (151677) and occasionally, enflurane were the anesthetics used in all procedures. Forty of the 54 nitrous-oxide personal breathing zone exposure level measurements exceeded 25ppm. Time weighted average exposures showed 32 of the 41 personal procedure period exposures exceeded the 25ppm criteria. Fourteen of the 46 halothane breathing zone measurements exceeded the 0.5ppm combined gas criteria, and 4 of the 14 exceeded the 2ppm level. Based on the number of personal exposures above the NIOSH Criteria, it is concluded that waste anesthetic gases are not being controlled to the extent feasible; therefore, workers are receiving greater exposures than are necessary or advisable. Recommendations are made for improving existing conditions. [Description provided by NIOSH]
