Description:A Hazard Evaluation and Technical Assistance survey was conducted by NIOSH on August 22-25, 1977, at the Mansfield General Hospital(SIC- 8062), Mansfield, Ohio, acting on a request from the management regarding exposures of operating room personnel to waste anesthetic gases. Of the 34 area samples for nitrous-oxide (10024972), 19 exceeded the recommended standard of 25ppm. Nitrous-oxide levels at or below the NIOSH recommended standard were achieved by the use of the ventilator with specially modified exhaust fitting, and the anesthesia circle system with ventilator/isolator. Levels of 50-220 ppm occurred with makeshift scavenging systems in use as designed by anesthesiologists. Personal samples for halothane (151677) ranged from 0.6 to 4.6ppm. Recommendations are made to modify the equipment as necessary, and to make routine maintenance checks for leaks. [Description provided by NIOSH]
