Description:Primary care providers can act as critical advocates for the populations they serve by promoting climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies to optimize the health spans of patients. As frontline providers, primary care providers are critical informants for policymakers, public health researchers, and patients on the emerging health impacts of climate change. In addition to emergency preparedness in the face of increasing climate-related events, primary care providers must be aware of increased risks to marginalized patients related to both extreme weather and vector-borne illnesses and of mental health and environmental impacts on chronic disease management. By educating emerging health care providers as well as patients about this great threat to public health, primary care providers can increase the resilience of the patients they care for in the face of increasing pressure from climate-related changes.
