Description:Occupation is an important contributor to disparities in respiratory disease, affecting financial status, health-care access, and exposure to hazardous substances. Occupational exposures contribute to disparities across a spectrum of respiratory diseases; this article focuses on asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, coronavirus disease 2019, silicosis, and lung cancer. Because occupational exposures are largely preventable through proper workplace controls, the recognition of occupational causes of disease can provide an opportunity for interventions that can bring about health equity. Clinicians, employers, regulatory agencies, policymakers, workers, and unions play essential roles in improving workplace conditions and decreasing disparities in respiratory health.
