Description:From 2001-2018, 30 workers have died while working in a trench, 20 of whom died when the trench wall collapsed and buried the worker. MIOSHA defines a trench as an excavation (any man-made cavity or depression in the earth's surface, including its sides, walls, or faces, formed by earth removal) having a depth greater than its width measured at the bottom. Worker deaths in trenches have also been caused by electrocution, asphyxiation, drowning, and being struck by objects (such as an excavator bucket, geofoam block, water tank, and backhoe).
