Injury Risk Factors Associated with Agricultural Workplace Fatalities

  Agriculture has consistently ranked among the top four industries in both frequency and rate of death from workplace injuries. Analysis of a case series of 119 field investigations of occupational agricultural fatalities, conducted through the NIOSH State Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluation (FACE) program, indicated the presence of multiple injury risk factors for 90% of the incidents. The most common risk factors were unrecognized or unaddressed injury hazards, safety equipment not being available at the worksite, and the use of equipment or work methods that contributed to the worker's exposure to injury risk. The risks identified here are amenable to a variety of prevention strategies, including educational programs and engineering controls. [Description provided by NIOSH]
