Description:This document has been superseded and the new version can be found here. In 10 years, 55 mine workers died from falls (10 Others, 16 Laborers, 12 Equipment Operators, 9 Mechanics, and 8 Truck Drivers). 1. Minimize working at heights - Design, install, or move equipment to reduce or eliminate fall risk. 2. Install barriers - Prevent access to hazardous areas and clearly identify hazards. 3. Use a personal fall arrest system - Use harnesses of the correct size, designed for the task, and with substantial and secure tie-off points. Ensure you inspect, maintain, and are trained to use fall arrest systems. 4. Inspect and maintain equipment - Look for defects, fix damaged and improperly modified equipment, and use equipment as intended. 5. Pay special attention - Be especially cautious during maintenance and repair and installation, construction, or dismantling activities. [Description provided by NIOSH]
