Description:The dust control devices described have been successful in reducing dust levels in mines. They were not chosen as a list of research accomplishments, but to illustrate the nature of the research performed by the Bureau. Likewise, the research described to understand the formation of respirable dust was chosen for the same purpose. The overall focus of the current program is the investigating of silica dust since Federal dust standards become more stringent when silica is present. Emphasis is on identifying the sources of silica dust and in discovering the mechanisms by which it becomes airborne so that control concepts can be designed for all mining methods--auger- and drum-type continuous mining, longwall mining, and surface mining. Research to identify dust sources also includes investigating methods for selectively sampling or measuring diesel engine exhaust particles so that the diesel-produced fraction of the respirable coal dust can be determined.
