Description:Longwall face workers noise exposures can be reduced through engineering noise controls and in the case of the headgate operator, with administrative and/or engineering controls. Most of the engineering controls are not "quick fixes" and would require the cooperation of equipment suppliers/manufacturers. On the other hand, as noted above, the ready availability of a comfortable, quiet place could easily solve the noise exposure problems associated with the headgate operator. But, the authors consider this will not happen unless there is a comfortable "quiet" place for the headgate operator to retreat to that would be close to or especially designed and located on the equipment.
