Longwall Mine Noise and Recommendations to Reduce Worker Noise Exposure

  Longwall face workers noise exposures can be reduced through engineering noise controls and in the case of the headgate operator, with administrative and/or engineering controls. Most of the engineering controls are not "quick fixes" and would require the cooperation of equipment suppliers/manufacturers. On the other hand, as noted above, the ready availability of a comfortable, quiet place could easily solve the noise exposure problems associated with the headgate operator. But, the authors consider this will not happen unless there is a comfortable "quiet" place for the headgate operator to retreat to that would be close to or especially designed and located on the equipment.
