Description:Background: Agriculture is among the most dangerous occupations - #2 most dangerous for younger workers. Agricultural Hazards can be more dangerous for adolescents than adults. Projects: 1) Urine samples from youth (2014): N=61; $10 for every sample returned; Cooler provided w/detailed instructions; 90% of youth returned all 7 samples; Sundays: Before and after church. 2) Pesticide safety education (2016): N=200; youth ages 12-21; $40 for two surveys; $55 if attend all 4 sessions; Flexible scheduling: twice per week; Retention: 84%-91%; Attendance: 85%-88%. Challenges: A large nursery filed bankruptcy; impact workforce? Adolescents working fast-food jobs rather than nursery jobs? Involvement in this project will not impact status with employer. Establishing trust in the context of national climate. Recruitment Strategies: Community-wide health fairs; Radio presence; Trusted project coordinator. Engagement Strategies: Targeting specific venues for program delivery (e.g., churches). Careful construction of survey instruments and protocol that are sensitive to Latino families. Incentives ($, dinner, certificate). Lay Health Advisors, "promotoras de salud" deliver curriculum to parents and youth: Rapport; Trust; Communication; Experience working with families; Program delivery is an interactive process.
