Description:Speed cranking or using two fingers to crank the landing gear seems like a time saver until a broken cheekbone or nose teaches you differently. This is what happened to a 23-year-old truck driver. He was speed cranking and leaned in too close when BANG! The handle broke his nose. It was a very painful lesson. Often new drivers are trying to impress their employer by working quickly. Remind them that safety comes first and to use their entire hand to grip the landing gear handle. Tips to Live By - Workers: Always firmly grip the handle of the landing gear crank. Steady yourself with your opposite hand on the trailer. Wear the appropriate gloves for the job. Employers: Train new workers on safe methods. Remind workers that you value safety over speed. [Description provided by NIOSH]
