Description:Cupric oxide is heat-decomposed in the presence of an oxygen scavenger, such as solid carbon, to produce high quality cuprous oxide suitable for use as a pigment. Thus, 1,000 g of +8 mesh cupric oxide pellets were placed in a Linder rotary drum furnace with the addition of coarse graphite blocks about 1 in by 2 in by 1/2 in and heated at 900 deg C while nitrogen gas at 25 l/min was passed through the furnace. After 3-1/2 h the charge was completely reduced to cuprous oxide. After grinding the product to -325 mesh and treating with about 1 pct oleic acid (to increase stability of reducing power), the cuprous oxide met the specifications of ASTM standards, 1964, part 20, "tentative specifications for cuprous oxide for use in antifouling paints."
