  • Description:
A method for making a supported Raney nickel catalyst by coating a nickel substrate with aluminum or aluminum-nickel alloy, heat treating the coated substrate above the melting point of aluminum but below 1,133 deg C, quenching at a temperature below 854 deg C to form NiAl3 as a solid phase in the substrate. The Raney nickel alloy coating is activated in the usual manner by leaching with sodium hydroxide solution. Thus, Al pieces sufficient to form a molten pool 8 cm deep were placed in a graphite crucible and covered with an equal depth of a mixture of cryolite 50, NaCl 25, and lif 25 wt pct. The crucible was placed in an electric furnace and heated to a temperature of 1,050 deg C to melt the aluminum and salt mixture; the crucible then contained a layer of molten salt floating on the molten aluminum. Ni substrate was prepared by spot welding 16 mesh Ni screen (0.305 Mm wire) to a 0.5 Mm thick Ni sheet, using 2 welds per square inch. The screen was fastened to both sides of the Ni sheet. These pieces then were heated to 1,050 deg C by lowering them into the salt bath for 5 s. Thereafter they were lowered into the molten Al for 1 s to secure a continuous coating of Al and then raised into the molten salt bath and held there for 2.5 S for heat treatment. The specimens then were quickly transferred to a cooling molten salt bath of a eutectic mixture of 65.5 pct CaCl2 and 34.5 pct NaCl at a temperature of 700 deg C and kept there for 30 s for rapid cooling and to replace insoluble fluoride salts present. After cooling to room temperature the specimens were washed with (Abstract Truncated) [Description provided by NIOSH]
