Description:The Bureau of Mines is studying methods for fractionating multicomponent metal scrap by filtration. This is to be accomplished by separation of liquid and solid phases consisting of (1) liquid and crystalline phases formed by addition of a component that reacts with one or more components in the liquid to form a compound with a high melting point, (2) liquid and crystalline assemblages equilibrated at constant temperature, and (3) liquid metals from fibers or particles in metal matrix composites. Equilibria in the systems Pb-Sb-Al, Al-Ti-B, Al-Si, and in superalloys are discussed. Data are given for purification of Pb-Sb alloys by formation and removal of AlSb, for purification of al by formation of TiB2, and for purification of Al by filtration of the Al-Si eutectic liquid from purified solid Al.
