Description:This paper presents a proposed classification system of the types of mine roof falls in an attempt to prevent and reduce their incidence in coal mines. Rather than classifying roof falls based on specific structural and compositional factors, which tend to be useful only in certain mines, the proposed system separates roof failure into two general categories--geology- and stress-related failures--in an attempt to be useful in a variety of locations. These two categories are further broken down into subtypes, and possible preventive measures are outlined. [Description provided by NIOSH]
