• Description:
  The Bureau of Mines has been active in respirable dust research since passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. Until several years ago, the main thrust of the research program was on the development and new and improved dust control technologies to reduce the miners' exposure to respirable dust in mines employing conventional and continuous mining methods. As a result of the efforts of the Bureau, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), and the coal mining industry, significant progress has been achieved in lowering the dust levels in these mines from over 5 mg/m3 in 1969 to less than 2 mg/m3 today. This is reflected in the number of citations issued by MSHA in recent years. Based on inspection data, at least 95 pct of all conventional and continuous mining sections are currently in compliance at any given time. [Description provided by NIOSH]
