Description:A comparison study of respirable dust concentrations obtained by real time aerosol monitors (RAM1s) and gravimetric samplers during longwall mining operations was conducted. Personal gravimetric and instantaneous RAM1 measurements were made simultaneously at a point 4.6 to 6.1 meters (m) on the ventilation intake side of the headgate drum of a longwall shearer and at the midpoint of the shearer, between the two operators. The samples were obtained while 11 longwall faces ranging in height from 1.8 to 2.4m were sheared. The RAM1 had been previously calibrated with a coal dust sample to make the RAM1/gravimetric ratio equal to 1. The RAM1/gravimetric ratios for all data obtained at the intake and midpoint positions were 0.53 and 0.75, respectively. When data obtained from head to tail cuts only were analyzed, the RAM1/gravimetric ratios at the intake and midpoint positions were 0.53 and 1.00, respectively. The authors conclude that statistically significant differences exist in the RAM1/gravimetric ratios for data obtained at the shearer intake and midpoint positions of longwall faces. The difference between the RAM1 and gravimetrically determined dust concentrations may be due to differences in dust size distribution, airflow velocity, and orientation of the cyclone with respect to face airflow.
