Description:Bureau of Mines industrial hygiene programs are reviewed. The noise research program is described. Development of a personal audio dosimeter which assesses exposure to intermittent noise over a working shift is described. Use of ear protective devices and noise control systems on percussive drills are considered. Expenditures on the noise program and its significant results are detailed. Research in the field of industrial hygiene for miners has concentrated on toxic gases and materials and diesel engines. The development of methods of reducing toxic materials resulting from the operation of diesel engines and the development of alarm and monitoring systems are discussed. Other problems needing attention with these engines are enumerated. Program goals in the respirable dust program are examined. Two studies to prevent the generation of dust through water infusion of the coal bed prior to mining and machine parameter modification are described. Dust suppression techniques are also considered. Use of water sprays, a water flushed bit, and foam for dust suppression are examined. Use of ventilation and dust collection are described. Funding of the respirable dust program is summarized and program accomplishments are listed. A mining research technology transfer program to introduce new or improved technologies into practice in the coal mines is described. [Description provided by NIOSH]
