Description:Coal mine dust has been characterized by computer processing of scanning electron microscope (SEM) information. Characterization of the dust is the basis for understanding aerodynamic behavior of the dust, for identifying its origin, and for monitoring the effectiveness of dust-suppression techniques. Three coal mine dust samples were analyzed according to a procedure which was described in detail. The computer program produced analytical information on particle area, equivalent circular diameter, particle perimeter, major axis dimensions, minor axis dimensions, orientation, area of fitted ellipse, perimeter of fitted ellipse, faster line, raster column, aspect ratio or shape factor of the particle, and particle type identification according to a code.
