Occupational Health and Safety Surveillance in Colorado

Details

  • Description:
Through this grant, Colorado was able to conduct a number of occupational health surveillance data activities, which contributed to understanding the health for workers throughout the state, and how work serves as a social determinant of health. We annually calculated and reported Colorado's state-wide Occupational Health Indicators (OHI) to the NIOSH Clearinghouse and the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE), and posted the OHI's on the Colorado Department of Public Health's website. We also annually monitored and reported adult elevated blood lead level cases to the NIOSH Adult Blood Lead Epidemiology and Surveillance (ABLES) national dataset. Additionally, from 2015 to 2017, we included industry and occupational questions in the state-wide Behavioral Risk Factors Surveillance System (BRFSS). The Occupational Health Program in Colorado, which was supported by this grant, responded to countless workplace health and safety concerns and inquiries during the project period - ranging from routine calls for advice on workplace safety, exposure prevention, and health regulations, to large scale workplace outbreak investigations in response to toxic exposure events and/or health concerns of workers. The program conducted more than 50 trainings, courses, or presentations that provided occupational health education to a variety of stakeholder types, including university students, occupational health professionals, and worker stakeholder groups. In the final 2.5 years of the grant, the Occupational Health Program played a key role in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, working to protect essential workers with industry-specific outbreak prevention guidance and outbreak response.
