After Farm Safety 4 Just Kids was started in the mid '80s it was soon discovered that in order to effectively influence the knowledge, attitude, and behavior of youth on the farm that local people were essential for success. These volunteers have become the backbone of the organization, conducting hundreds of educational programs yearly and teaching about staying safe and healthy while on the farm. Training to get the most up-to-date data and obtain sound educational delivery methods and resources is important, especially for those new to the FS4JK Chapter Network and delivering farm safety and health programs. Chapters request training to get the most up-to-date data and obtain sound educational delivery methods and resources. A workshop setting provided networking to learn from staff and other volunteers. Educational strategies increased participants' knowledge and use of skills to teach farm safety to youth and their families, encourage safer attitudes, foster safer behaviors, and reduce injuries. Workshop objectives included: Increase knowledge of FS4JK resources and programs; Increase participants' proficiency in teaching injury prevention and hazard recognition to youth and their families; Provide hands-on experience, where chapter members have the opportunity to put in practice what they've learned Intense training on identifying accurate farm safety and health educational material and resources, delivering high-quality farm safety and health programs, and presentation techniques was given. The workshop attendees tried out their new skills by presenting farm safety lessons and educational materials to school age children. Pre and post surveys identified gained knowledge and anticipated behavior chance. Students showed positive growth in all eight of the questions included in the survey. Workshop participants were given the opportunity to critique their own abilities in a non-threatening atmosphere and learned from other participant attempts. Workshop participants indicated growth in thirteen areas of program delivery. [Description provided by NIOSH]
