Description:Throughout the period of grant support, July 2008 through June 2013, Montana Tech conducted two NIOSH-supported training programs under a single Training Project Grant. One was an undergraduate program leading to a B.S. degree in Occupational Safety and Health (OSH). The other was a graduate program leading to an M.S. degree in Industrial Hygiene (IH). Both programs were housed in the Safety, Health, and Industrial Hygiene Department (SHIH). Eight faculty members in the Department were substantially involved in teaching and research in safety, health, and industrial hygiene. The undergraduate OSH curriculum provided a comprehensive education to develop graduates with the skills needed to obtain initial employment, contribute to their profession, and become active in their citizenship. The first two years of the curriculum focused on foundation disciplines. OSH courses were concentrated in the third and fourth years. Graduation requires 128 credit hours. The graduate IH curriculum provided a full range of IH courses, supporting electives, and a research experience. The IH curriculum required 37 credit hours consisting of 31 credit hours of courses and seminars plus six hours for thesis research. A total of 67 degrees were awarded to students from NIOSH approved programs during the 5-year grant project period. These consisted of 39 B.S. OSH degrees, and 28 M.S. IH degrees. Many companies recruited on campus for OSH and IH students. Undergraduate placement was strongest in the construction, mining, and oil & gas industries. The IH graduates took positions in consulting, manufacturing, oil & gas, mining, and environmental restoration. Initial placement into OSH/IH positions, or graduate school in IH, was 93 percent for OSH and 96 percent for IH. Faculty provided students many opportunities to participate in research. The faculty and students had 15 publications on topics related to the NIOSH mission, public health, and environmental health. The NIOSH grant provided funds for valuable program enhancement, primarily through scholarships that help sustain enrollment levels. Additional enhancements included student travel to regional conferences and support for the continuing education of faculty. NIOSH support unquestionably enhanced program quality and recognition.
