Western States Occupational Network Meeting

  • Description:
The Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) has demonstrated the lack of capacity in states to sufficiently track work-related injury and illnesses through several national assessments. Over the past decade, CSTE has worked in collaboration with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) towards the goal of increasing state-based occupational health surveillance capacity. In spite of these activities, most states continue to have minimal capacity in occupational epidemiology, and therefore may not participate in Subcommittee meetings, teleconference calls, distribution list communications, or the occupational health program at the CSTE Annual Conference. To address this gap, the Western States Occupational Network (WestON) meeting has focused on building occupational health capacity in Western states with minimal existing programs. The concentration on Western states stems from common issues regarding workplace safety and health. These issues are points from which collaboration and partnerships have grown. WestON is a network of state-based occupational health epidemiologists and administrators from 19 western states, the NIOSH and U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) federal partners, NIOSH Education and Research Center (ERC) professionals and NIOSH agricultural (Ag) center professionals. This network was established to provide needed occupational safety and health capacity-building in an area of the US where capacity is lacking. The WestON meeting is a unique opportunity for this group to meet and address common workplace safety and health issues and to further develop collaborations and partnerships to enhance state-based epidemiology, surveillance and prevention of work-related injuries and illnesses. As a result of WestON, states have identified new partnerships, completed the occupational health indicators, networked with other states and partners on topics of occupational health importance, applied for continued funding, initiated occupational health investigations, and shared best practices, research findings, and funding opportunities.
