The Northwest Center for Occupational Health and Safety (NWCOHS) is a multidisciplinary training program at the University of Washington (UW), dedicated to the prevention of work-related injury and illness. The NWCOHS is administered through the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences (DEOHS) of the UW School of Public Health (SPH) and includes program elements in the Schools of Nursing (SoN) and Medicine (SOM). The primary goal of the NWCOHS is graduate student training with a strong emphasis in research-based education. In addition, the NWCOHS serves as a resource for continuing education and other outreach activities to health and safety professionals throughout Federal Region X, and produces research findings aimed at characterizing and avoiding workplace hazards. All of these activities are intended to reduce or prevent workplace injury and illness and to promote worker health and well-being, The latest competing renewal application (for 2015-2020) funded by NIOSH includes Center- Wide Activities (CWA); three core academic programs of Industrial Hygiene (IH), Occupational Health Nursing (OHN), and Occupational Medicine Residency (OMR); one allied academic program in Occupational Health Services Research (OHSRT); and a continuing education program. Two new Targeted Research Training programs were funded, Construction Management Occupational Safety and Health (CMOSH) and Occupational Health at the Human-Animal Interface (OHHAI).
