  In this three part study we investigate labor-market earnings, benefits adequacy and equity, and the probability of marital break up of workers' compensation claimants. Part 1 of the study investigates the long-term labor-market earnings of claimants with permanent impairment and the wage replacement rates provided by two markedly different disability programs that existed in Ontario, Canada over the 1980s and 1990s. One program was a single benefit, impairment-based program and the other a dual award program that provided a future economic loss benefit for loss of earnings capacity as well as a non-economic loss award for pain, suffering and loss of enjoyment of life. A third program from British Columbia, Canada is also brought into the comparison. This program was bifurcated, offering the higher of two formulations for benefits one based on impairment and the other on loss of earnings capacity. In Part 2 the labor-market earnings and benefits adequacy and equity of short-term disability claimants are investigated with a sample of claimants from Ontario. Part 3 is an investigation into the risk of marital breakup of claimants with permanent impairments from Ontario and British Columbia. This study is based on data from a linkage of workers' compensation claims from the two Canadian provinces with Statistics Canada's Longitudinal Administrative Databank. The latter database contains information on the earnings sources and amounts reported to Revenue Canada for a 20% sample of Canadian tax filers and their census families over a period of approximately 25 years.
