Leadership Intervention for Fire Service Personnel

  A multi-component leadership intervention was developed for and delivered to fire fighter officers in an urban fire department. Results from this NIOSH Demonstration project documented both subjective and objective benefits that persisted for at least one and one-half years following the final treatment module. Both officers and line fire fighters in the participating department evidence benefits on the subjective indicators supporting the basic premise that more relaxed, competent leaders would confer indirect benefits onto their crewmembers. A documented decrease of 10-15% in absenteeism in the Demonstration Fire Department translated into a 4: 1 cost-benefit ratio for the leadership intervention. [Description provided by NIOSH]
