  The purpose of this community-based project is to provide health education and farm safety training to Hispanic farm workers and their families living in Walla Walla, Benton-Franklin and Yakima counties. This research was developed around the assumption that theater is an effective method for providing farm health and safety education to Spanish speaking agricultural workers. The hypothesis being tested is, "appropriate farm health and safety knowledge increases as a result of attendance at a one-act Spanish play enacted by a community players group." The most urgent health and safety education needs were identified by a series of focus groups and key informant interviews. The data gathered was used to develop four Spanish one-act health and farm safety plays. Twenty play performances were presented across the three county region of Eastern Washington that is most densely populated by Hispanic seasonal and migrant farm workers. The project tested the effectiveness of theater as an educational tool, identified the nature and extent of barriers to providing this type of education, and an evaluation of the perceived effects of the project on the community. It compared settings of plays and the effects of environment on retention. Finally, two methods of dissemination were addressed. The one act plays are enjoyed by the Hispanic community and increase workers' awareness of health and safety issues. The plays are the most effective in community event settings. However, dissemination is a problem due to the cost and/ or time commitment in producing the plays. [Description provided by NIOSH]
