Description:The objective of this study was to develop a simulation model of a ventilation system in a modern swine building used for farrowing pigs. The building was divided into two zones: the room where the pigs reside and the pit that stores the waste. In addition to a space heater and lamps, two fans located in the side wall of the room and one fan located in the end wall of the pit were used to control the indoor temperature. A differential equation expressing the conservation of energy was written for each zone. The room equation contained heat generation terms to account for thermal energy due to lights, heaters, and pigs. Control strategies based on an actUal controller in the room were developed,to activate the heaters, lights, and fans to maintain room temperature at a setpoint. An icon-based software was used to solve the system of equations that represent the model. The model was validated by comparing numerical and experimental results. By systematic adjustment of a limited number of model parameters, the model results are in agreement with the experimental data [Description provided by NIOSH]
