Description:As part of a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health-funded study of the incidence of occupation asthma, the electronic databases of a large health maintenance organization were used to develop a computerized algorithm for defining prevalent asthma. The predictive values of eight distinct utilization profiles were validated by chart review to establish the final algorithm. Using a 12-month window for analysis, we estimated a prevalence of 4.1 % among members aged 15-55, with the pharmacy and outpatient care databases accounting for 61 % and 66% of this total, respectively. By extending the search of the outpatient care database, the estimated prevalence increased to 5.3%, with 81 % of these accounted for by the outpatient care database. This analysis illustrates that electronic clinical information systems that provide disease-specific diagnostic Data for outpatient visits, coupled with electronic pharmacy records, provide a powerful and accurate tool to study asthma-related health care utilization and for population-based disease management.
