Description:During this grant period 18 occupational health nurses graduated from one of the two major options offered through the occupational health program at the University of Pennsylvania. The Primary Care Option prepared nurse practitioners in occupational health who can be certified by Pennsylvania and the American Nurses Association. The Administration/Consultation Option prepared occupational health nurses who can develop and manage occupational health programs at the executive level. The objectives and goals of the educational program were to enhance the health of individual workers, the aggregate work force as well as provide the business community with excellent occupational health care professionals. Students must complete four semesters of course work containing ample clinical practice. Major accomplishments during this reporting period included the development and implementation of the Administration/Consultation Option with the Wharton School, the development of a model regional OSHA internship and its successful completion by two students, development of international occupational health initiatives, greater interdisciplinary and outreach efforts, a beginning program in research in the health of health care workers and an exhibit at the Smithsonian institute which featured the origins of American public health nursing. Improvements were also made in the curriculum and faculty strength. [Description provided by NIOSH]
