Description:In 1981 the NIOSH Educational Resource Center was established at the University of Michigan Center for Occupational Health and Safety Engineering. The program has provided professional and research training in industrial hygiene, occupational health nursing, occupational medicine, and occupational safety engineering and ergonomics. Recently a program was added in hazardous substances academic training as a complement to the program in industrial hygiene. The continuing education and outreach programs were large. The center worked with the Michigan Department of Labor to provide ergonomics training and technical assistance to small Michigan companies as part of the outreach program. Training programs were provided at little or no charge. Over 30 companies participated and approximately 1,000 persons were direct recipients of training activities. A computer conferencing network was established and provided a forum for discussing ergonomic issues by practicing professionals. Exhibits were held at both local and national safety and health conferences. Three computer software packages for evaluating workplace musculoskeletal requirements were maintained and licensed to individual users through this study period. High school students and those entering college participated in a series of tours of center facilities. [Description provided by NIOSH]
