Description:The main purpose of this project was to demonstrate the technical feasibility of an innovative chemiluminescent technique for the selective detection of isocyanate species in air at levels as low as generation of a reactive stream of oxygen atoms which is then combined with the air stream being sampled to produce activated CNO species from any isocyanates present. The activated CNO species then decay to ground state species with the emission of light which is detected and quantified as a measure of the amount of isocyanate in the original air sample. Using this approach, toluene- diisocyanate (584849) could be detected in room air at a level of Aliphatic isocyanates were detected but with detection limits higher than the target 0.02ppm. Further optimization of the system should extend the detection limits for these materials to the 0.02ppm level. The monitor provided nonspecific analysis of isocyanate species and therefore, served as a total isocyanates monitor rather than as a monitor of individual isocyanate species in air. The preferred source of reactive oxygen for the monitor was high purity oxygen, rather than the originally proposed room air. Chemical interferant effects were minimal for typical organic compounds including aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, and ketones and inorganic species. [Description provided by NIOSH]
