Clarification of the Role-Quality Concept

  Using a cohort of 403 women who worked as health care providers and were licensed practical nurses or social workers, an examination was made of the relationships between various aspects of role quality in these women's social roles and measurements of their health. The three social roles considered were those of paid employee, partner, and parent. The health measures used included psychological well being, psychological distress, and physical symptoms. Role quality was a complex construct consisting of two aspects: level of benefit and level of involvement. The level of benefit was the rewards minus the concerns a woman experienced in each of her social roles. This level was consistently and significantly associated with each of the three health measures studied. Women reporting higher levels of rewards compared to concerns also reported higher levels of well being, lower levels of psychological distress, and fewer physical symptoms. The level of involvement was defined as the total amount of rewards and concerns experienced in a particular role and was a significant predictor in only one model. Among employed mothers, higher levels of involvement in the role of parent were associated with reports of more symptoms of psychological distress. [Description provided by NIOSH]
