Description:A commercial vacuum system for asbestos (1332214) removal was evaluated. The system was tested at the Municipal Building (SIC- 9211), Elmwood Park, New Jersey and Montville High School (SIC- 8211), Montville, New Jersey in 1982. Both sites were chosen by the New Jersey Department of Health. Preliminary environmental surveys showed the high school to have high asbestos concentrations at 12 to 707 nanograms per cubic meter (ng/m3) in the ambient air. The municipal building had 18 to 328ng/m3. The asbestos removal system consisted of two major components, a remote packaging unit and a truck mounted vacuum source. Filtration efficiency was evaluated by the dioctylphthalate smoke penetration method and the isokinetic suspended particulate analysis method. Filtrations efficiency was found to be 99.97 percent by the former and 99.46 percent by the latter method. Asbestos concentrations were reduced to 12 to 140ng/m3 at the high school and 4 to 14ng/m3 at the municipal building. The authors conclude that the vacuum system was effective in removing asbestos at the municipal building but relatively ineffective at the high school. [Description provided by NIOSH]
