Endocrine Function of Workers Exposed to PBB and PBBO. Terminal Progress Report

  Thyroid and reproductive dysfunction was investigated in workers exposed for at least 240 hours to decabromobiphenyl (13654096) (PBB) and decabromobiphenyloxide (1163195) over a 4 year period. The average period of employment was 3.9; mean age, 34.7. Medical questionnaires, physical examinations, and laboratory tests were conducted. Air samples of PBB in the manufacturing area showed 0.18 to 0.23 milligrams per cubic meter for an 8 hour time weighted average. Of 18 workers exposed for 3 years or longer, thyroid nodules were seen in 3; another nodule was seen in a worker exposed to high chlorine (7782505) concentrations. Significant correlation was seen between length of employment and concentrations of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) in workers exposed to PBB. An abnormal FSH value was found in only one worker. A testicular cyst was found in one exposed worker, and epididymal nodules in two others. No testicular or epididymal nodules were seen among comparisons. No detectable PBB was found in serum. The author concludes that thyroid hyperplasia may result from exposure to PBB, but no definite statement can be made concerning adverse effects on the prevalence of testicular and epididymal nodules because of their prevalence in the general population.
