  • Description:
Background: As of June 1, 2016, the Biosafety and Infectious Disease Training Initiative (BIDTI) is a recently funded National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences Worker Training Program. BIDTI's mission is to positively and meaningfully impact the health of communities by providing practical hands-on health and safety training to prevent the transmission of infectious diseases of public health significance. Recent literature has underscored best practices on how workers within clinical settings can mitigate and manage the risks of highly infectious diseases (HIDs), but our target audiences seek to be inclusive of all industries including emergency medical technicians, emergency managers, the death care sector, waste handlers, transit workers, and the general public. Methods: Nationwide trainings will aim to increase population health and safety, through education on infectious diseases at: (1) Community level - brief modules with basic information about communicable diseases, (2) Awareness level - full day courses with direct training and train-the-trainer models for workers with elevated exposure risks, and (3) Operations level - multi-day courses aimed at workers with a great likelihood of exposure to serious communicable diseases. Results: It is our intent to reach thousands of workers and conduct over 6,000 person-hours of training over the next three years. Conclusions: Long term, we seek to prepare workers for the actual risks associated with infectious diseases of public health significance so that they may protect themselves, their colleagues, and their environment from these exposures using sound scientific methods and to promote the health, resiliency and financial stability of workers and their communities.
