Description:This NORA sector research program addresses the needs of wholesale and retail trade (WRT) for a safe future. This bulletin contains information about: 1. Kickoff speakers for the Manual materials Handling (MMH) Workshop David E. George & Brian E. McNamara. 2. Latest News from InsideOSHAOnline.com - Six demonstration projects spearheaded by NIOSH researchers have found examples of how ergonomically designed manual materials handling equipment could be used to reduce the physical burden of manual lifting in wholesale and retail jobs, agency officials said. Researchers updated participants in the National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) on the demonstration projects during a liaison committee and partnership meeting June 29 in Washington. NIOSH developed the demonstration projects through its wholesale and retail trade sector program, whose mission, according to a slide presentation for the NORA meeting, is to provide leadership and technical information; promote occupational safety and health (OSH) as a core value or operating principle within the industries; and partner with trade organizations to ensure that OSH principles are highlighted in their programs and meetings. 3. NIOSH and Industry Updates - a) NIOSH signed a Letter of Agreement with the Food Marketing Institute (FMI) ; b) Various forms of promotional materials were developed and distributed; c) Updated CDC/NIOSH/ Wholesale and Retail MMH Workshop & Meeting Website; d) NIOSH has a surveillance portal for the WRT; e) NIOSH sent out a call for MMH experts in the WRT business sector who would share some real manual lifting problems that need to be improved in efficiency and safety; and f) The proposed OSHA recordkeeping requirements apply to the WRT: OSHA is proposing to update Appendix A to Subpart B of its Injury and Illness Recording and Reporting regulation.
