Description:This NORA sector research program addresses the needs of wholesale and retail trade (WRT) for a safe future. This bulletin contains information about: 1. Preventing Work-related Motor Vehicle Crashes - Motor vehicle crashes in the U.S. are the leading cause of worker deaths. The incidents by categories include: 1) deaths in single- or multiple-vehicle crashes on public highways, 2) deaths in crashes that occurred off the highway or on industrial premises, and 3) pedestrian worker deaths as a result of being struck by a motor vehicle. NIOSH recommends a series of safe guards for employers and employees who must drive during their work day. Obtain this fact sheet at: https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/docs/2015-111/. 2. NIOSH Exhibit at Food Marketing Institute Asset Protection (FMI AP) Conference - The FMI AP Conference seems to be the up and coming meeting of the year for professionals in risk management and asset protection. The theme for the NIOSH exhibit was "Preventing Material Handling Injuries," which featured the NIOSH Publication: Ergonomic Solutions for Retailers [NIOSH 2015-100]. Multiple sessions dealt with how to perform risk assessments and improve risk management. You can learn more about FMI and Asset Protection at http://www.fmi.org/industry-topics/asset-protection. 3. Emerging Issues: Small Business Retail: Violence Prevention Study - Small retail businesses report high rates of robbery and violent crimes leading to injury and death at work. NIOSH awarded a grant to the University of North Carolina Injury Prevention Research Center to study the prevention of violence in two groups; small and large retail businesses. Additional information on the prevention of workplace violence can be found at https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/violence/. 4. Prevention through Design (PtD): Job Design - Prevention through Design (PtD) is a National Initiative to prevent or reduce workplace injuries, illnesses, and fatalities. The strategic plan establishes goals for the successful implementation of the PtD Plan for the NIOSH National Initiative. To learn more, go to NIOSH's PtD web page. 5. Prolonged Standing: NIOSH Seeks Employer Feedback - NIOSH published a recent Science Blog on "prolonged standing," which is common in some retail and wholesale jobs, including cashiers. Frequent changes in body posture and movement appears to be the best approach for reducing the risk of various health problems associated with prolonged standing or fixed postures. http://blogs.cdc.gov/niosh-science-blog/2014/12/09/standing/.
