Description:This NORA sector research program addresses the needs of wholesale and retail trade (WRT) for a safe future. This bulletin contains information about: 1. Sleep Deficiency (Fatigue), Pain, and Loss of Productivity in Retail Work. A study conducted almost 10 years ago revealed that fatigue is more prevalent than most health providers realized. A national survey indicated that nearly 40% of the respondents reported that they had experienced fatigue in the previous 2 weeks that was severe enough to disable them. Fatigue, the researchers noted, was associated with a loss of productive work time and a loss in the quality of life. In terms of prevention, the topic of sleep must be addressed as a vital part of a company's safety and health program, particularly for employees who work rotating shifts, evening shifts, night shifts, or long work hours. Employees need to be aware of the effects of sleep deficiencies for dealing with common workplace hazards. 2. Fatigue: Five Facts to Save Your Life. 1. Fatigue is physical or mental exhaustion.... 2. The body is designed for sleeping 7-8 hours during the nighttime.... 3. Fatigue makes workers feel weary or unmotivated.... 4. Long work hours may increase the risk of injuries.... 5. Employers and workers need to view sleep as an important safety requirement.... Both employers and workers need to make getting enough good quality sleep each day a priority.
