  This report presents a general overview of the known and potential carcinogenic hazards of occupational exposure to ionizing radiation based on a review of the literature published since 1970. Recent findings are reported, and current substantiative issues and the impressions of investigators regarding the evidence for ionizing radiocarcinogenesis, dose-response relationships, synergistic (cocarcinogenic) effects, and proposed radiocarcinogenic mechanisms are identified. The risk of excess radiation-induced cancer under commonly encountered conditions of occupational exposure is estimated, and specific gaps in the present knowledge of radiation carcinogenesis are identified. Specific areas in need of further investigation are recommended. This report is part of a larger survey of the carcinogenic properties of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation.
