NIOSH Hazard Controls HC9 – Control of Wood Dust from Orbital Hand Sanders

• Description:
  In an effort to control dust generated during the use of hand held orbital sanders, a new control approach was developed. Even though some of the sanders in question were equipped with dust removal capabilities, dust control has not been sufficient to protect the worker. The Dust Control Plenum was developed and tested on an orbital sander. The plenum fit between the sanding pad and the sander body and was equipped with a series of exhaust slots along its edges. There was an exhaust connection on the top of the sander pad which connected the plenum with a vacuum source. The plenum reduced wood dust emissions by about 90%. The control equipment did not in any way interfere with the operator performing his job, and it was relatively low in maintenance and inexpensive to install and operate.
