NIOSH Hazard Controls HC7 – Control of Wood Dust from Large Diameter Disc Sanders

  A ventilation control system was designed to cut down on dust generated during the use of large diameter disc sanders. Workers using the sanders have been exposed to dust which causes irritation to the skin and eyes, allergies, limited lung function, asthma and nasal cancer. The Jet Stripper System, designed to improve dust control, was presented. The equipment supplied pressurized air to the disc inside the hood. High speed air blew the dust particles out of the disc air layer, allowing them to be captured by the exhaust hood. Dust particles embedded in the sanding disc were also removed by the air jet. Use of this system reduced wood dust emissions by an average of 60%. Using the control system did not interfere with the operator and the completion of his task. The system also required low maintenance and was not expensive to operate. By removing wood dust from the surface being sanded, it was thought that the dust control system may also extend the life of the sanding discs themselves. At the present time the system is not commercially available. [Description provided by NIOSH]
